MATHEW CAREY (1760-1839) A short account of the malignant fever, lately prevalent in Philadelphia: with a statement of the proceedings that took place on the subject, in different parts of the United States. Printed by the author 1793 2nd ed. 103 [9] pp. 21 cm.
Born in Dublin, Carey emigrated to Philadelphia in 1784 after serving a prison sentence for revolutionary activities in Ireland. He became active in the Philadelphia publishing community and, in 1820, founded the Philadelphia journal of the medical and physical sciences which, after a change of title in 1824 to American journal of the medical sciences, is still being published. The present work first appeared early in November, 1793 and went through four editions within several months. The title page of this edition is dated November 23. Carey gives a graphic account of the great yellow fever epidemic that struck Philadelphia in 1793, with mention of the many measures adopted to combat the disease.
