One of the early physicians of New York City, Miller achieved a wide reputation for his clinical competence and powers of observation. He was one of the first physicians to assert that yellow fever was not contagious, and he made extensive investigations of fever and cholera. Together with Samuel L. Mitchell and Elihu H. Smith, Miller began the Medical repository, America's first medical journal. The present collection of his works was gathered by Miller's brother Samuel (1769-1850) at the urging of Benjamin Rush.
