An Austrian, Mohrenheim became body-surgeon and accoucheur to Empress Catherine II of Russia, by whose order this now rare work was published. The book opens with a brief literary history of obstetrics, followed by an extensive text. The remarkable life-size engravings, many of them after Smellie (see No. 825), represent female genitalia, embryos, deliveries, and instruments.
