FRANZ JOSEF GALL (1758-1828) Philosophisch-medicinische Untersuchungen über Natur und Kunst im Kranken und gesunden Zustand des Menschen. R. Gräffer 1791 vii, 720 [6] pp. 21.5 cm.
Despite his notable contributions to the field of neuroanatomy, Gall is chiefly remembered as the founder of phrenology, a "science" he developed with his student-collaborator, Spurzheim (see No. 1315 ff.). Unfortunately, the rapid rise of phrenology, its subsequent distortion, and eventual fall from favor, tend to obscure Gall's more deserving work, among which is this early treatise on philosophical anthropology.
