Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1145

ANTOINE FRANCOIS DELANDINE (1756-1820) De la philosophie corpusculaire. Chez Cuchet 1785 [4] 200 [3] pp. 20.9 cm.

This little known tract is an impassioned plea by Delandine in support of Mesmer (see No. 1013) and his theories of animal magnetism. The author defines the corpuscular theory, fluid and animal magnetism, the role of iron, and the combination of these and other universal powers in the treatment of disease. The use of hands, magnetized metal bars, and the magnetic properties of music are recommended as therapeutic measures. Delandine, who wrote a number of other scientific tracts, wished to remain anonymous and is listed as M. Del****** on the title page.
