FRANCOIS RAYMOND (fl. 1756-1779) Histoire de l'elephantiasis. Chez Francois Grasset, et comp. 1767 [4] 132 pp. 17.3 cm.
Raymond, professor of medicine at Montpellier, here relates several case histories of what he terms elephantiasis. Analysis of his descriptions indicates that the disease could be leprosy, yaws, or neurofibromatosis, among others. He notes that elephantiasis is a condition found chiefly in warm climates and coastal locations. Raymond believed that it could be transmitted congenitally or by breast feeding and that it was incurable. Other diseases such as scurvy and syphilis are also discussed and are treated with little understanding of etiology or pathology.
