In addition to the present work, Soemmerring's atlases of the eye (No. 1134), ear (No. 1136), tongue and male larynx--Abbildungen der menschlichen Organe des Geschmackes und der Stimme (1806)--and that of the olfactory organ--Abbildungen der menschlichen Organe des Geruches (1809)--are among his principal works. Soemmerring intended this work as an appendix to Hunter's atlas of the gravid uterus (see No. 942). It covers the early phases of pregnancy, which were not included in Hunter's work. As in nearly all of Soemmerring's atlases, the drawings were done by Christian Köck (fl. 1750), whom Soemmerring trained especially for his anatomical works.
