In addition to being a physician, Foes (see No. 348) was a scholar with a deep interest in Hippocrates. Foes labored many years to complete his extensive concordance of Hippocrates' works (see No. 348) as well as this massive compilation of his writings. Authorities rate this as the most comprehensive edition of the Hippocratic corpus before that of Littré (see No. 12). Organized into eight sections with Foes' Latin translation and notes, the book includes Soranus' life of Hippocrates, a detailed index, and conjectural emendations by Aemilius Portus (1550-1614). The Greek and Latin texts are arranged in parallel columns and each section has separate pagings, which are sometimes irregular.
