Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1094

DANIEL H WHITNEY (fl. 1790) The family physician and guide to health. Printed by H. Gilbert 1833 vi [7]-599 [1] pp., 5 plates. 19.8 cm.

During the early part of the nineteenth century, many medical books intended for family use were published in the United States. They were usually encyclopedic in nature, contained questionable advice, and almost always had herbals or dispensatories full of unusual and usually useless medications. Whitney's work is typical of the period and, in addition to an ample dispensatory, includes sections on the theory and practice of medicine and surgery, the diseases of women and children, an outline of human anatomy, an explanation of the Asiatic cholera, and a medical dictionary.
