JOHN PUGH (fl. 1790) A treatise on the science of muscular action. Printed for C. Dilly 1794 ix (misnumbered xi) vi-xvi, 106 pp. 15 plates, each accompanied by a duplicate outline plate. 31.6 cm.
John Pugh, a little known eighteenth-century anatomist and physiologist, was an advocate of a number of techniques and practices which might sound familiar to the modern physical therapist. He placed special emphasis on exercise in rehabilitating limbs affected by neuromuscular conditions and constructed an apparatus to aid in their restoration. Thomas Kirk, the artist responsible for the engravings, was well known for his portraits which were frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. His rendering of the fifteen plates was produced by using stipple engraving, achieving a three-dimensional effect.
Gift of John Martin, M.D.
