Of Swedish extraction, Swediaur was born in Austria and studied medicine in Vienna. Interested in venereal diseases, he practiced successfully in London for a number of years before moving to Paris to continue his work. It was while practicing in London that he wrote the first edition of the present book in 1784. After relocating to Paris, he wrote the definitive and extremely popular Traité complet sur les symptomes, les effets, la nature et le traitement des maladies syphilitiques (see No. 1077).
