Like Pinel, Rush strove to better the conditions of the insane and sought to establish American mental hospitals based on the best English institutions. His treatment, however, sometimes included profuse bleeding and total physical restraint, which frequently resulted in even greater misery for the patient. His work on diseases of the mind is the first, and for many years was the only, American work on mental illness.
