Although he made few original contributions to medical science, Lettsom is remembered as one of the founders of the Medical Society of London and for his History of the origin of medicine (1778). Lettsom was a strong supporter of the new practice of vaccination and this book contains, in addition to Lettsom's general remarks on the subject, several interesting letters including those to Benjamin Waterhouse from John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
