SAMUEL BARD (1742-1821) A compendium of the theory and practice of midwifery. Printed and sold by Collins and Perkins 1808 239 pp., illus. 17.1 cm.
This was the first textbook of obstetrics written by an American and was a much respected work. The author, a graduate of King's College (Columbia) and of the medical school at Edinburgh, was a specialist in obstetrics. Long interested in medical education, he taught in the medical school in New York and, when it was united with Columbia College in 1792, became its dean.
