First edition of this work on peritonitis and infant apoplexy, celebrated for its accurate description of peritonitis. Two of the plates show the reproductive organs of women who died 24 and 36 hours after childbirth from peritonitis, giving details of the arteries, veins, etc., of the uterus; the other two show the infant crania. The plates are all by Johann Bernhard Gottfried Hopfer. Walter was professor of anatomy in Berlin and then Frankfurt: he formed the magnificent anatomical museum, the Museum der Berliner Hochschule, which was later acquired for the Berlin University.
