This early American edition of Denman's important text on midwifery is the first to incorporate his Aphorisms on the application and use of the forceps and vectis. The vectis is a curved lever used to produce traction on the head of the fetus during delivery. This is also the first American edition to include plates which depict the female pelvis, the fetus in utero, delivery techniques, and uterine tumors. This edition is especially useful because of the American point of view introduced in the notes and annotations written by John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861), an accomplished obstetrician and professor of obstetrics and the diseases of women and children at the State University of New York.
