- Truncate your term using an asterisk (*)
Example: Bell* will retrieve Bell and Bellini - Use quotation marks to search for phrases

Basic search
A Basic Search can be performed on any screen. The Basic Search bar is located at the top of every page of the Heirs site except the Advanced Search page. Enter one or more words and click the "Search Heirs" button.
Advanced Search
From any Basic Search bar click on the Advanced Search link. Fill in one or more fields, select your Sort Options and click the "Search Heirs" button. Or, scroll down the page to Browse by Author or Time Period. Unless enclosed in quotation marks, multiple words on a single line will be linked by the "and" operator.
Author Word(s)
Examples:
- james primerose
- primerose
- bell* [will retrieve Bell, Bellini, etc.]
Title Word(s)
Example: natural selection
Publication Year
- Examples:
- 1493
- 149* [will retrieve records published from 1490 through 1499]
- 14* [will retrieve records published from 1400 through 1499]
Publisher or Place or Edition
Examples:
- London
- Decker
- 2nd ed.
Language
Select a language from the dropdown box
References Cited
See the Cited References page for additional information about these references.Heirs Number
Each work has a unique number assigned to make the entries chronological by year of birth of the author.
Examples:
- 615
- 615...625 [will retrieve all records from 615 through 625]
Donor
Examples: "John Martin"
Time Period (Author)
Select a time period (based on Author's birthdate, not publication date) from the dropdown options: Ancient; Medieval (500-1450); Early Modern (1450-1700); Modern (1700+)
